MASTER OF ARTS IN TEACHING MAJOR IN GENERAL SCIENCE
I.                 ENVIRONMENTAL SCANNING
Science sums up the way logical and strong concerning way of man’s relationship with the physical world in which he lives. Science is the first and foremost man’s reaction to the experiences and impressions made on his senses by the world of nature, its forces, its elements and all laws governing these happenings. The mind of man tries to associate and correlate all these marvels of nature, observed, studied and scrutinized by man through his senses and intellect and cultivated curiosity. Science is an adventure of human spirit. It is essentially an artistic enterprise, stimulated largely by disciplined imagination and based largely on faith in the reasonableness, order and beauty of the universe of which man is a part. In other words, science like music or fine arts, is a well-spring of the divine discontent that stirs man to see more of life than to eat and to sleep. And that discontent is flamed higher by the partner of science, advancing technology, through which we can realistically contemplate the practical achievement of the highest levels for the condition of man.
Science in schools, therefore, can and should make a difference in the lives of the upcoming generations, and the differences should be on the positive side, rather than on the negative side of the ledger. Science has been referred to as self-corrective process of finding out. Projecting science as a human endeavor, with the same basic faults as its inventors, permits the students tobe optimistic.
In the Philippines, the realization of the rapid changes that take place in everyday life and the consideration that these changes result in the necessity of making man superior to his ever complicating environment have strengthened and widened the role of education to enable man to sustain his survival and eventually attain progress. Despite the enormous strides the country has made in scientific knowledge, science teaching remains largely an art. Evidently, teachers have not yet discovered either the proper motivating factors or the pedagogical techniques (or both) that are needed for developing true scientific literacy.
The scientific community has produced a highly ordered body of knowledge and has developed a methodology that appears to be reasonably successful in guiding toward a better understanding of nature, yet except for selected groups of students and teachers have not succeeded in imparting this knowledge to others in a meaningful way. It is in view of the situation presented above that this study is intended to concentrate on science teaching particularly on strategies both motivational and instructional.
II.               PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
This is a thesis program that aims to develop competence in teaching methodology and science content. Graduates of the program are expected to be able to follow the latest developments and to help them to become better teachers of General Science in the secondary and introductory level.
III.              PROGRAM OBJECTIVES

IV.              ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

1.      Bachelor’s Degree with 21 units in General Science.
2.      A grade point average of 2.0 or B- or above in the undergraduate major field of study.
3.      Pass the Graduate Admission Test.
4.      Pass the interview by the department chair.
In addition to the above requirements, NON-BSE graduates with less than 3 years of teaching experience are required to take a 6-unit practicum course. Applicants with insufficient background in science will be required to take prerequisites courses of up to 6 units.
V.               RETENTION/ GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
Completion of all required units with an average of 2.0 or B- or better in order to continue the program and thus qualified for graduation. Minimum of 6 units per semester and a maximum of 9 units are strictly observed. Likewise, passing the written and oral comprehensive examination is required before pursuing the thesis. Thesis well defended by the researcher is qualified for graduation.
